MetaTrader 4 (MT4) — Kuwait

One MetaTrader 4 window carries two moments at once: entries that were fixed in the past and will not change again, and values that are being recomputed while the window is open.

A MetaTrader 4 window shows two layers side by side. One is a record: closed trades, the journal, the candles already formed, the balance — figures that were fixed at a moment and will not change again. The other is live state: the current quote, the floating result of an open position, equity, free margin and the margin level, recomputed as prices arrive. The two are printed in the same font in the same window, which is why reading them with one glance produces a conclusion that is wrong about at least one of them.

The record layer: entries that are already finished

Closed trades, journal lines and formed candles have one property in common: reading them tomorrow gives the same answer as reading them now. Nothing is recomputed, only appended, which is what makes them usable as evidence about a moment that has passed.

Balance sits in this layer too, even though it moves. It moves in steps, when something finishes — a position closes, funds arrive or leave — and between those steps it is as fixed as any closed entry.

The live layer: figures being recomputed as you look

The quote, the floating result of an open position, equity, free margin and the margin level are all derived from the price arriving right now. Writing one of them down converts it into a record about one second, and the screen has already moved on.

This is why a live figure quoted without its moment says very little. The same window a minute later may carry a different value for every row in this layer while every row in the other layer is untouched.

Where the two layers touch and mislead

Balance and equity are the classic pair: two figures a few pixels apart, one fixed and one moving, and the gap between them is simply the floating result of what is still open. Read as though both belonged to the same moment, that gap looks like an error.

A chart mixes the layers along its horizontal axis, and a closed market hides the distinction altogether — every live figure freezes and starts to look like a record until trading resumes.

Separating the two layers before drawing a conclusion

  1. Name the figure being read and place it in one of the two layers.
  2. If it is a record, note the moment it was fixed — it answers a question about that moment and no other.
  3. If it is live state, treat it as already out of date the moment it is written down.
  4. Do not subtract a live figure from a recorded one without stating which moment each belongs to.
  5. When a live figure stops moving, check whether that instrument is trading before treating the value as settled.

Most contradictions between two figures on one screen turn out to be a difference of moment, not of arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

Which numbers in MetaTrader 4 stop changing, and which never do?
Closed trades, journal lines and candles that have finished forming stop changing. The quote, the floating result of an open position, equity, free margin and the margin level are recomputed as prices arrive.
What is the difference between balance and equity on the MT4 screen?
Balance is a finished figure that moves only when something completes. Equity is that same figure with the floating result of open positions added, so it changes with every tick while a position is open.
Why does the last candle on an MT4 chart keep changing?
Because it has not finished. Every candle to its left is a record of a period that has ended; the rightmost one is live state and keeps being redrawn until its period closes.
Is the Account History tab ever recalculated?
No. Entries there were fixed when the positions closed, and later events do not reach back into them. New rows are added; existing rows are not rewritten.
A value on the screen has stopped moving — does that mean it is final?
Not necessarily. A live figure freezes when the market for that instrument is not trading, and it resumes moving when trading does. Only figures in the record layer are final by construction.
Can a figure from the Trade tab be compared with one from Account History?
Only if the moment is stated for the live one. The history entry describes a moment that has passed; the Trade tab describes now, and subtracting one from the other without saying so compares two different times.
